Impact on BOM for Various Use Cases
A SAW-less architecture significantly reduces the cost of an LTE Cat M1/NB1 modem.
See Figure 5. The electronic BOM of a legacy implementation (5-b) can be up to 30 percent more expensive than a SAW-less architecture (5-c).
Let’s look at three configurations to quantify this cost gap. One is a simple dual band SKU, another a US SKU and the last a dual mode M1/NB1 North America plus Europe SKU.
As can be seen from this comparison, A SAW-less design architecture allows the device cost to remain consistent regardless of the number of bands used, while traditional design architecture is already more expensive in a 2-band configuration with cost increasing for each band added.
